#12
Genesee County
The Village of LeRoy was already known as the Patent Medicine Capital of the World in 1897 when P.B. Waite created a powdered gelatin dessert (his wife named the dessert Jell-O). In 1899, he sold the recipe to the Genesee Pure Foods Company, owned by Orator Woodward, for $450. In 1925, Jell-O was sold to the Postum Company (which later became known as General Foods).
